The Industrial Bearing Branch of the Miba Bearing Group produces hydrodynamic bearings for use in mechanical and plant engineering which are used in a wide range of high-performance applications (turbines, compressors and industrial pumps).
These applications are used in power generation as well as in the oil and gas industry and the chemical industry.
Miba's Industrial Bearing Branch produces hydrodynamic bearings. These are used in large-scale equipment and serve as a critical part of the machine in maintaining the radial position and alignment. In compressors, they support the rotating shaft of the turbo engine. Hydrodynamic bearings are also used in generators, high-energy pumps and in transmissions where they carry the load of rotating components.
Hydrodynamic bearings play a very important role in the operation of rotating equipment (e.g., compressors, steam turbines, gas turbines) and are classified as critical components. They are not only required to absorb the operational and shutdown loads of a rotor and transfer it to the housing, they are also responsible for the position of the rotor and stator relative to each other in all operational situations and under all operating loads (unbalanced load, gas load, etc.). Hydrodynamic bearings are able to perform these tasks without wear while ensuring minimal power loss.
At the Göttingen site, Miba employs a team of highly qualified engineers in the area of research and development. The employees of the R&D department belong to the technology area and are in direct contact with our customers and the research institutions in Germany and Europe, among others.
Since 2013, two bearing test benches for radial bearings have been in heavy use at the Göttingen site for conducting experiments and trial series aimed at improving performance, efficiency and security. The focus is currently on improving the performance of bearings. One of the test benches is being rebuilt to test axial bearings in the future. Radial bearings of all types in the bearing size Ø120 mm are examined using the second test bench.
The test bench configuration makes it possible to examine bearings in a wide power range of 0–125 m/s circumferential speed (<20,000 rpm) at specific static loads of up to 10 MPa (max. static load: 63 kN) and dynamic loads of up to 5 kN.
In addition to testing different bearing configurations and variant designs, new bearing materials are also tested. Furthermore, the test bench helps us to review the test results, and to use that information to verify and optimize our calculation tools.
The results of numerous test series have put us in the position to develop a much deeper understanding of the conditions in a hydrodynamic bearing.
The Göttingen site has a number of different affiliations with universities and research facilities in Germany. Most recently, a customer bearing was the subject of intense research with a university in North Rhine-Westphalia. Miba has unlimited access to the results and they will be used for further analyses.
Through its membership in associations, the Göttingen site is also represented in the European research community on the topic of hydrodynamic bearings. One of these associations is the Research Association for Combustion Engines (Forschungsvereinigung Verbrennungskraftmaschinen e.V.) or FVV.

Miba interstage and balance piston seal solutions can provide a major advantage in the way rotating equipment performs. In most applications, the internal seals are often the overlooked component for increasing overall efficiency. Miba is one of the most technologically experienced manufacturers of thermoplastics seals, striving to help our customers get the most of their applications by increasing machine efficiency. Centrifugal compressors are commonly equipped with metallic seals from original supply. Through upgrading these seals to a thermoplastic design, it is possible to reduce running clearances and improve machine efficiency while achieving additional benefits of increased reliability, corrosion resistance, ease of installation, reduction in cost of ownership and increased machine uptime.
