Miba HPC and ICC: The fast bypass switches with long endurance

The Miba HPC (High Power Closer) and ICC (Industrial Crowbar Closer) are fast-acting switches. They are triggered by a short signal. After that, the bypass switches remain permanently activated even without ignition voltage. Continuous currents of several thousand amps are possible without any problems. And not just for short periods, but also for longer periods of time.

Bypass switch as a bridge for failure

Large HV-DC systems are equipped with several power units. If a power unit fails unexpectedly, the Miba HPC bypass switch is activated. This then bridges the defective power unit. As a result, only this one power unit fails and the others remain in operation.

Miba HPC and ICC systems are used in the following applications:

  • HV-DC systems
  • Capacitor energy storage
  • Crowbar circuits

We are happy to give you an overview!

What exactly is a bypass switch and why is it crucial for industrial applications?

The Miba HPC bypass switch closes in less than 1 ms and provides a permanent connection. It is used for fast and sustained performance in industrial applications:

Application in HV-DC systems

HV-DC systems are used to transport electricity. For transport, the alternating voltage must be converted into direct current. Bypass switches are installed parallel to the individual power units. They are activated in a fraction of a second and remain permanently switched. This bypasses the defective power unit and the network of power units remains in operation.

The advantages of the Miba HPC bypass switch are:

· Fast activation (1 ms)

· Only 14 W is required for activation for a duration of 1 ms

· Permanent connection for currents up to 2500 amps

· Up to a maximum voltage resistance of 6.5 kV

Application in power generation with PV systems

In MW PV systems for generating renewable electricity, central inverters are often used to feed solar energy into the grid.

To protect the PV system in the event of a central inverter failure, for example if a power stage fails, the Miba ICC can be used in a crowbar circuit. The short-circuit switch can prevent reverse current from flowing from the grid to the PV system within a very short time.

Crowbars are used to protect against overvoltage. The Miba ICC short-circuit switch can also perform this task. If critical overvoltage levels are reached, the Miba ICC short-circuit switches are activated within 1 ms and remain permanently switched on.

The following table provides an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of thyristors and Miba HPC or ICC bypass switches.
