Further growth in wind energy: Miba delivers machines for over EUR 50 million for the construction of giant wind towers in the oceans

Laakirchen, September 20, 2024. The energy transition is a key growth driver for Miba. It now generates EUR 150 million with products for the generation and transmission of energy - a market that already accounted for 12 percent or the second-largest share of the Upper Austrian technology group's total sales in the past financial year. With new orders of more than EUR 50 million for special machinery required for the construction of giant wind towers in the oceans, Miba is continuing on this growth path.

Miba milling systems enable optimum welding of monopiles

Miba Automation Systems, Miba's mechanical engineering specialist in Aurachkirchen (Upper Austria), will supply milling systems for the Dutch Sif Group and the Korean company GS Entec, which are needed for the construction of huge new wind towers in the oceans, by the end of 2026. The two Miba customers are among the global market leaders for monopiles, which are foundation pipes up to 120 meters high that anchor the wind towers to the seabed. The monopiles are driven up to 60 meters into the ground. In order for such a structure to be erected in the sea at all, three to five meter long pipe segments are first bent from metal plates in ports, welded together and then assembled into the monopiles and brought out to sea on ships. The quality of the weld seam is crucial, as the individual pipe segments and the overall construction must be able to withstand enormous loads. This is where Miba Automation Systems comes into play: its machines are used to mill a weld seam preparation into the metal - creating the basis for the pipe segments to be optimally welded.
The two major orders from Sif Group and GS Entec include the construction and delivery of milling systems for new wind farms in the seas off Europe and Korea. Other customers will also be supplied, such as the Korean company Nexteel.

Mitterbauer: “A prime example of how Miba is seizing the opportunities of the energy transition”

“Miba Automation Systems' large volume of new orders for wind energy is a prime example of how we are taking advantage of the many opportunities presented by the energy transition,” explains Miba CEO F. Peter Mitterbauer. “Together and in close cooperation with our customers, we are developing new solutions for the generation of clean, sustainable energy. And we support our customers in reducing the carbon footprint of their products. This is the core of our corporate mission 'Technologies for a cleaner planet', which has been driving Miba's growth for more than ten years.”
